No Grub loader displayed on startup

Asked by Roman Stingler

If I install natty whether Ubuntu or xubuntu there is no grubloader displayed on startup.
If I install it on an usb-stick the grub loader is displayed normally.
On ubuntu just a "dark magenta" screen is displayed no grub or sth. else.
on xubuntu a black screen is displayed and in the left upper corner there is a alternating underline.
also no grub.

Is the Ubuntu partition marked as "boot"? If so, and it still doesn't work, I'd try using, for example, a Debian netinst cd which comes with a rescue option, and which whould allow you to reinstall GRUB to your Master Boot Record.

(as root)
grub-install '(hd0)'
update-grub

If that doesn't work, your problem may come from your BIOS. Is your hard disk set as the primary disk, i.e. boot disk?

For Ubuntu, try to reinstall Grub2 from CD:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20from%20LiveCD
For Kubuntu, it looks as classical blank screen: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-fix-ubuntu-10-04-lts-lucid-blank-screen-at-startup.html but I'm surprised you have it with Kubuntu and not Ubuntu.

Can you help with this problem?
