lost grub after installing updates. unable to boot.

Asked by gevie

I ran the last two updates and then finally restarted the desktop. I am using 10.10 x64 ubuntu. the restart just went to a blank screen. I am unable to determine where my boot record should be. I am currently using the live disk. how do I find where the boot record should be so I can copy the boot record from the Live CD. and how do I copy the boot record when I find where it should be located

This is what I get when I try to mount sde I had also tried this previously using sda, sdb to no avail. How do I find where the grub2 resides and how do I change to that directory?

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sde: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000de9fd

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sde1 /mnt
mount: special device /dev/sde1 does not exist
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sde2 /mnt
mount: special device /dev/sde2 does not exist

Usually disk enumeration starts at sda. So I presume you have a very unusual configuration of disks and USB sticks. Could you describe it?
Could you provide whole partition table ? I see no partition on your sde disk.

When I loaded Ubuntu 10.10 I did a complete new install. I formated the whole hard drive and just let Ubuntu take up the whole thing. I did not do a dual boot only ubuntu. That is why I assumed that sda1 would be for the boot record. I have been using Linux since the days of caldera. then went to Mandrake and mandriva and finally ubuntu for the last 5 years or so. This is the only time I have ever lost the boot loader. I am not much of a tech guy that is why I like ubuntu. but even loading gparted, I can't find any partitions however it only shows 465.76 gb of my 500 gig hd. So I can only assume that the other 34.24 gig of the hard drive is where the boot, swap and ubuntu live. It shows no other partition and shows the 465.76 gig as unallocated. The only thing I can attribute it to is that I downloaded the last two updates on two different occasions and the first of those I did not restart like it recommended and then I waited until I had downloaded the
next update and then did a restart. At that time all I got was a black screen when it restarted. It works fine with the live disc. so I don't think there is anything wrong with the computer.

I never was able to find the partition where ubuntu resided. I gave up and did a fresh install. However this time I set up a seperate home partition. Maybe that will save my info in the future. Thanks for your effort anyway.

Avoid posting with previous message included. It made thread unreadable. Remember each time I read the whole thread to remember the question.
About GBytes of disk, it's hard to measure as you have both GBytes and GiBytes, and also 10% reserved for OS.
Don't restarting immediately after an update is not as issue. What can be an issue is installing a new kernel, as sometimes Grub2 configuration is badly rebuilt.

"Maybe that will save my info in the future. " Yes!
