Boot error: "Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported"

Asked by Peter Pukka

I've tried installing 10.04 and 10.10 onto a HP Compaq nc6400 with a brand new Hitachi 7K320-250Gb hard drive. Ubuntu will boot from the CD in trial mode (downloaded from the site), but once installed to the harddrive all I get is the following error:-

error: out of disk
grub rescue) {flashing cursor}

Details of the Boot directory were analysed last week, however the help received the time seems to have gone quiet, so if any else has any advice to offer I woul be very grateful.

I'm effectively a complete novice here, I've tried all sorts of commands, but not even help is recognised.
What do I do now? - All help VERY gratefully received!!

Could you try to reinstall from CD: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20from%20LiveCD
If it fails, run following procedure:
---
Provide data about boot configuration

There is a standard script provided to analyse boot configuration.

Could you download script at:

   http://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

Then in a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) run command:

    sudo bash boot_info_script055.sh

This will produce a file named: RESULTS.txt

Paste content of this file in http://paste.ubuntu.com/ and provide in this thread the link to Web page.

Please don't post file directly in thread, else it will make thread difficult to read.

I tried re-installing from the CD, and I'm getting a different error mesage now, as below:-

GNU GRUB version 1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3

Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions.

grub)

I'll try running the bootinfoscript, and post again once it is completed.

I cannot run boot_info_script055.sh

Do I have to save it to a specific place on the harddrive, and if so, where?

When I try to run it in a new terminal, it comes back with the error:-

bash: boot_info_script055.sh: no such file or directory

If I don need to move or save this file to another folder, could you also advise how I should do this - I am a complete novice, so don't know how to do even the basic stuff - steep learning curve coming up!!

Open a terminal and go in folder where is the script.
Else provide the path before the script's name.

How do I do that?

I'm a real novice, and I don't know the basics in Linux.

The file was saved in the Downloads folder

cd ; cd Downloads ; sudo bash boot_info_script055.sh
should work

No, it says no such file or directory. The file is in /home/ubuntu/downloads.

What is the command in the terminal to access the file there? You used ; above, is there a space before or after the semi-colon?

It is saying:-

bash: cd/home/ubuntu/downloads/: no such file or directory

With a space between "cd" and "/home/ubuntu/downloads/"
Please copy/paste command, by selecting text and after using middle button of mouse. Don't retype at keyboard.

OK, I cut and pasted it, and got the error message below (also cut and pasted)

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ cd /home/ubuntu/downloads
bash: cd: /home/ubuntu/downloads: No such file or directory
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

Is there a way of searching to establish where the downloaded file is?

cd /home/ubuntu/Downloads
Avoid retyping. Do copy/paste. I copy/pasted from one of your previous post, on which you made a typo!

OK. Got to that point. I tried to run the file, and got the below:-

ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Downloads$ boot_info_script055.sh
boot_info_script055.sh: command not found
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Downloads$

OK - what do you want me to take a photograph of? The screen during the boot sequence?

On the screen where you get:

error: out of disk
grub rescue) {flashing cursor}

I'm interesting to have all data displayed.

Can you help with this problem?
