My dual-boot computer (Windows XP Professional & Ubuntu 10.10) will not boot after XP did a disk check on startup.

Asked by John Atkeison

My dual-boot computer (Windows XP Professional & Ubuntu 10.10) will not boot after XP did a 3-part disk check on startup.

I get hung with an underscore cursor in the upper left corner of the screen, having never gotten to the option to pick the OS. (My assumption is that XP screwed with the boot loader or something.)

The computer is an HP Compaq 8710p with 2GB RAM and a 160GB drive.

I am running off the install DVD that I created by downloading the disk image last week.

Help is greatly appreciated- I do not know where to start.

The more I think about it, the more I consider just re-installing Maverick... thoughts?

Maybe just reinstall Grub from the live media.

xp does a disk check when there's something wrong the the harddrive. seeing that all you get is a blinking cursor, you'll need to re-install ubuntu. when it fixed the bad sectors that it found, it might have erased some parts of ubuntu.

The message from XP was that everything was OK... I think I will try reinstalling GRUB first, then cut to the chase and head back to reinstalling the entire distro if that isn't satisfactory.

Thanks, folks!!
