sometime computer suddenly hang, sometime the display turned off but the computer still running

Asked by slashgear29

So right now I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop PC, it is dual booted with Windows 7. But I don't know why, lately there's something wrong with my GRUB that I need to purge it twice in 10 days.

Then, also lately, there are few times when my I'm using my PC, suddenly the display turned off by itself, of course I've check the monitor power and it is find, and I'm sure the computer is still running when the display is off.

Finally, starting today the worst happened, the computer stuck in a loop 3 times in the last 6 hours, everything just hang and the music I'm playing is keep repeating one part again and again, and sometimes when I turn on the PC I need to restart a few times until it can enter the Ubuntu successfully.

Is there anyway to help the condition I'm in now, or is it a hardware problem?

Thx a lot in advance

Looks like a freeze. Could have many grounds (too many).
Check RAM.
Check temperature and fan rotation.
Have you a hot weather (I have this issue with my PC, after adding an internal drive) ?
And do a BACKUP!

Thanks delance, just now I realize that there's too much dust inside my PC, maybe that what caused the fan to have problem, and the place I live now is indeed very very hot.

Gladly this problem hasn't come back since I posted this question.

Thank you
