usb installation problem

Asked by Emma Milne

I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu Netbook onto my usb stick and am currently using the test version you can use before installing it... however the install won't work... It gets so far before saying it cannot install extra files from CDROM (i thought it only needed the usb?). The error window says apt error... my laptop now will not boot in windows as that is now gone.....HELP!!!

Did you intend to replace Windows with Ubuntu, or set up a dual boot netbook? No CDROM is needed with a usb install, but there may be references to /cdrom as a directory where the usb stick may be mounted. What happens when you try to boot the netbook without the usb installer, do you get a grub boot screen?

Yes i intended to replace it as windows was heavily damaged. Yeah that what it says, apt failure and then it couldn't install the extras or something from /cdrom... i don't really have a clue what it's on about...
and no i have to enter the setup now by pressing f2 or f12 and choosing the usb stick. otherwise it just comes up with a blank screen with a hyphen flashing in the corner... :/

another postered had the same problem earlier today. it seems that problems occur with each moon cycle.

with the flashing hyphen, give this solution a try

Ever you installed from USB or CD-ROM, the error messages talk of CD-ROM. The installer simply use same error messages in both case.
"apt" is the software who manages packet installation.

If your network is unreliable, install without network. Network update can be done later.
Check your ISO image: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM.
If you still have problem, you could try alternate installer: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/alternative-download . It's the same Ubuntu installed, but installer is more reliable and give better error messages.

And forget Marcus's advise.
