10.10 won't boot without acpi=off edit

Asked by Ibrahim Birgeoglu

I cannot boot Ubuntu 10.10 unless I change the boot code to "acpi=off". If I don't do this it just shows a black screen with a blinking cursor that never gets anywhere. How do I change this permanently so that I can boot without having to change the code every single time?

FYI, I am doing a dual boot with Windows 7. (I am new to linux and ubuntu.) Thanks.

The following explains how to make startup options permanent: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132

What computer brand/model do you have. Sometimes updating the BIOS or other changes can prevent the need for this workaround.

I'm not seeing any permanent solutions - just others with the same problem.
On some computers updating to the most recent BIOS fixes this problem but I haven't seen a confirmation of this working for this model.

I guess all I can recommend is continuing to use acpi=off until someone figures out a solution.

Well I'll change it permanently then. I tried other things but only acpi=off works. Thanks.
