partitioned hard drive problems

Asked by dale

Toshiba Satellite w

I partitioned my Toshiba Satellite(w/Windows XP), 50/50 when installing Ubuntu 10.04/lucid lynx. Got error messages and re-started several times before successful installation. Startup screen had Windows & 5 Ubuntu Lucid/memtest to select. All Ubuntu choices started the same installation..no difference in files or installed apps. I just finished updating, and now I have 6 lines of Ubuntu on start screen and Windows has disappeared(Windows still shows as SQ003520 in Ubuntu "Places"). How do I get rid of duplicate start selections and restore the Windows start choice?

Log-in Ubuntu and try this command:

  sudo update-grub

Restart and see what happens

Thanks for your reply, but no joy. To clarify..after partition, start screen had 6 2-line Ubuntu choices(Ubuntu, with Linux2.6.32-21- generic[2.6.32-21 thru 26] & Ubuntu, with...(recovery mode), 1 Windows XP , 1 memtest. After last update, the start screen has 7 Ubuntu selections(2.6.32-21 thru 27), and memtest; but no Windows. I need Windows for Skype. The webcam that worked on another laptop with Hardy Heron(with headset/microphone) doesn't work with Lucid. I need Skype for Christmas calls to family.

Also..when I enter "sudo update-grub" in terminal; sudo-password for Dale shows, but won't let me enter any characters. The same thing happens in recovery mode; when asked for password, I can't enter anything.

Please note: when you type your password you will not see any back-chars screen so type your password then press enter.

Many thanks! When I deleted the duplicate menu choices; startup was a lot faster..and I have Skype in time for Christmas calls. Whatever you call your Supreme Being; may you be warmed by the presence this holiday season.

Thanks for the wishes. Happy Holidays to you too.

P.S. Skype runs on Ubuntu too!
