deleted initramfs-tools and now I cannot restore GRUB

Asked by John Wilson

Had a persistent error message on booting up: Could not load /etc/appamor/initramfs which I was attempting to repair using Synaptic.
Reinstallation did not fix the problem so I removed it, despite the warning, and my computer froze.
Shutting down to reboot led to me getting an error message from GRUB: Error 15 File not found for Ubuntu but can still boot to Windows.
I can boot from a live CD of Lucid or Rescatux but cannot repair GRUB
If I try and boot with a live CD of Ubuntu 10.10 it starts running and then the screen is black but the mouse still moves.
If I reinstall 10.10 from the live CD I presume I loose my data?
What are my options?

Your situation is not really clear!
First step is trying to reinstall Grub2: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20from%20LiveCD
If it fails, mount hard disk after booting from Ubuntu CD, and provide list of files on "/boot" folder.

Rienstalled Grub rescue but then when I booted up I did not get the GRUB screen but 'grubrescue' message and I could not boot up in Windows.
Cut my losses and reinstalled Windows and then Maverick but now my boot up stalls at the screensaver.
