install/update problem

I have previously installed and ran unbuntu 9.something and used it as a dual boot with xp. I decided to update to the newest version have encountered this problem.
I ran the update manager and everything seemed to work successfully, however when it restarted it I get an error that stops everything in it's tracks before even offering me the screen for choosing which OS to boot to.
The error is:
no such device 77aza35-etc.
grub rescue>
What can I do to get either windows to boot or fix the install?
