Im also having a similar problem,
I use ubuntu 10.10, I used wubuntu installer to create a dual boot system, and it has worked well for the past few months, however yesterday I went to boot ubuntu as I normally do, and it just brought me back to the boot menu, windows will still boot, and I am using it now, however I would like to restore ubuntu because I have important files I need off of the desktop. I am an amateur user so step by step directions would be AMAZING! if anyone can help me!

Actionparsnip advise didnt work, after fooling around a bit, I got Ubuntu to boot, but lost Debian. I saw this this a advantage and deleted Debian from my laptop. Now when I boot back into Ubuntu, I have no panels or icons. I completed a clean install and counted it all as a lesson learned. dont fool with systems your not fully knowledgeable about.
