I restarted the PC while update to system 10.10 was still incomplete. Now the system is not re booting again

I was having ubuntu version 10.04 and was updating to version 10.10 online. Update was not complete. By mistake i restarted the computer and hence update was incomplete and now the system is not booting again. I cant even move the cursor.It gives the error installation is incomplete please contact service provider. Please help me out with this issue. I even tried live CD but it didnt worked. I do not have have backup of my system. I have to get the important data from my hard drive regarding my thesis.

Do you have a disk? If so simply place disk in tray and reboot.

Try to reinstall Grub from Live CD
   https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20from%20LiveCD
If your system became inconsistent, you could have to reinstall Ubuntu from CD.
Don't hesitate to post to get advices before doing anything.
