where to put bootloader ?

Asked by Bill C

I have 2 hard drives, sda has windows xp installed. Hard drive sdb is split in two, sdb1 & sdb2. sdb1 is formatted ntfs for windows storage. I want to install maverick on sdb2, (now the problem) where do I want to install the "bootloader" ? Perhaps sda ? as that is where windows loader is already (?) or sdb2 where maverick is going ? THX ! Bill

Best is to switch both disks, and to install bootloader in Ubuntu disk.
In Ubuntu, run
   sudo update-grub
to make it detect Windows and adding it to boot menu.

I do not understand,'switch both disks' ?
  (sda is 40gb sata, sdb is 82gb ide, split, sdb1 41gb, sdb2 41gb)
Install bootloader to ubuntu disk 'ok', I have only ventured into the terminal a couple of times, The "sudo update-grub" is all I have to enter there ?
This is my son's computer and just finished doing all the updates etc for his xp install, so I did not want to start over.
On my own computer I started with ubuntu and did not encounter this question when adding xp.
Thank-You for your fast response, Bill

Install to the mbr of the bootable drive you installed ubuntu to, it will then have the multiboot all on one drive

in windoze terms, you need to make the drive you installed ubuntu on as the master drive and the other drive with xp as the slave drive. it's just a matter or opening the cover up and changing the cable.

this way, when the computer boots, it will load the ubuntu grub and still give you access to windoze.

Can you help with this problem?
