[Usage] Remove 5 dots screen at boot
I'm trying to get 10.04.1 (64-bit desktop version) to boot to a text command shell instead of bringing up the GUI. I've reviewed postings for 9.10 and tried them, without success. These included:
1. removing a file /etc/rc3.d/S13GDM - does not exist
2. creating a file /etc/inittab with a line in it to set the run level at 3 - no effect
3. editing /etc/default/grub and uncommenting the line (per instructions in the file)
and then running "update-grub". No effect from that one either.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Ralph

No need for that just run:
gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub
change:
GRUB_CMDLINE_
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_
save the new file and run:
sudo update-grub
reboot to test

Ouch! That was a -really- bad idea. I wound up in blue screen mode, with a menu to allow me to recover (and no way to move the selection around). Finally got it into root shell prompt so I could undo that edit.
Any other suggestions?
