i lost my os can i install ubuntu

i was trying to install ubuntu (10.04) to my Toshiba laptop(satellite a120)serial num PSAFGC-MS7087
because i thought their was a virus on windows and my anti virus wouldn't work
so i installed it but it told me to reboot on one of the steps because my hard drive wasn't recognized ...
after i do that all i have is my toshiba boot menu and if i wait a black screen with a _ flashing at the top right i have waited for 15mins but it doesn't change ...
is their anything i can do.

Yes you can install. Check for errors before the install.

   Do you have a burnt CD ? If so check MD5sum, If you have a Pressed Cd then then just reboot and you may have to set your bios to boot from it.

Can you boot on Ubuntu CD, and choose "Try but don't install". Run System->Administration->Gparted, and check if disk is detected.
