Ubuntu 9.10 => Grub2
You should have in Grub menu two lines for Ubuntu. Could you try the second one ?
When you boot and get splash screen (the screen which comes immediately after selection of Ubuntu), type <ESC> key and look at text displayed. Please report last lines.
I don't fully understand your issue report. Do you reach login screen ?
