[Boot Win by default] Change my Bioot OS, There's no Startup Manager???

Asked by Zypster@comcast.net

I've just installed Win7 & Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit on a new Hard drive on my laptop. Win7 installed 1st. I would like win to boot by default. I know there's a way to do it command line but forget the proceedure. There was a tool that allowed you to change it in the ver. 9.10 called startup manager. But it's not there???

Since you have installed 10.04 startup manager will not work, because of the move from Grub to Grub2.

Look at "How to change the default boot order for Grub2 in Ubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat" - http://www.unixmen.com/linux-tutorials/1170-how-to-change-the-default-boot-order-for-grub2-in-ubuntu-1004-and-ubuntu-1010-maverick-meerkat

This looks suspiciously like the old way, with the old problem. If you update to a new kernel and that is added to the list the old kernel may become GRUB_DEFAULT=3. So until this is sorted it may boot into the old kernel again, instead of Windows.

To get startup manager, open System->Administration->Synaptic, and search its name in search folder.
I used startup manager to update Grub2 configuration in one of my virtual machine, so I presume that now it is able to manage Grub2.
There is a workaround I read, but not tested. In folder /etc/grub.d, rename file 30_os-prober to 09_os-prober and run "sudo update-grub". Now Windows will be installed in menu before Linux kernels at first place.
If you have difficulties, post again and I will check the process (but I will check only the week-end, so don't wait to try).
