Update 10.4 Ubuntu no longer loads

Asked by Linda Bahner

A day or two I used the update manager to install available updates to system. It required a restart. After restarting, it only would be in command code. I will re-replicate and copy what it says and post soon...

If you have grub boot menu, try 3td line and report if it works. In this case, you have an issue with latest kernel. If you have not this menu, press shift key at boot.

I don't know if I have grub boot menu, pressing shift key at boot doesn't do
anything.

Linda, did you happen to modify your bios settings?

Or perhaps you added a hard drive?

Are any new distinct "clicking" sounds coming from your computer?

I'm just trying to sense out if the problem is really grub, or if something else is preventing the machine from really seeing the boot device properly.

Did you install 10.04 from scatch, or was it an upgrade? If it was an upgrade, what version of Ubuntu did you install from scratch?

If I understand, the update manager proposed you to install a list of packets and you agreed.
In this list, it could have been a new kernel which doesn't work with your PC.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Grub2#grub%20%28/etc/default/grub%29
at start of line containing GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 add character "#".
After you should see Grub menu.
Try third displayed line.

Ok, figured out that the ESC button at startup goes to GRUB menu. I am able to use the 3rd one down....a generic 10.4. How do I get it to load at startup? Or is that a new question?

I think delance means for you to edit the first line in grub (press "e"), then edit the 3rd line in that entry, probably by pressing "e" again.

I dunno, does that help you at all.

Another possible "solution" could entail burning a copy of a boot rescue tool. I've never used this one, but it sounds promising: http://www.supergrubdisk.org/2010/08/28/rescatux-downloads-20100828/

A nasty but fast solution is
   sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg
search the section about Linux boot
and remove the two first block, which matches the two first line of menu.
The next time you will upload a new kernel, this file will be rebuild, and I hope this time you will have no problem with latest kernel.
-------------
If third line works, as I understood, please raise a bug against this kernel.

Can you help with this problem?
