[BIOS] cannot get past gnu grub 1.98+etc during boot

Asked by al_b

this past sunday i was performing some software maintanence on my unbuntu based laptop; during which i shut my system down (not a good idea i'll say). since then i've attempted to re-boot numerous times. system gets to gnu grub version 1.98+20100722-1unbuntu1 and hangs. my options are as follows; unbuntu, with linux 2.6.35-12 - generic, unbuntu, with linux 2.6.35-12 - generic (recovery mode), memory test (memtest86+), memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200), memory test (memtest86+, experimental multiboot) and memory test (memtest86+, serial console, experimental mulitboot).

needless to say i have attempted each multiple times. i have tried changing and saving the bios to boot to a number of different versions of unbuntu on cd and usb; all to no avail.

please help. any assistance is greatly appreciated

thank you in adavance

Thanks for your kind reply.

I ended up going into BIOS and disabled the IDE, LAN and NoEX. I enabled Boot-time and USB. Made totally sure that the first preference in the boot order was the DVD/ CD rom. Then re-booted. GNU Grub was gone, the system booted to the DVD/ CD. I chose install and all is well again.

Once again many thanks.
