[MD5] Ubuntu 10.04 will not boot! :(

Asked by Michael Langworth

I have a Dell Studio 1737, i have/had Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Full Release installed on my laptop. Just recently, i was burning a few data discs, and found that the data on the disc burning section wouldn't remove its self. I tried to delete but nothing happened.

I then shut my laptop down, rebooted it, and it just hangs on the "Booting Up" screen. None of the Kernels actually work, the Safe (Recovery) Mode doesn't work at all.

HELP!! What can I do???

Sorry to hear about your issue....I had the very same issue not too long ago and what I did to solve the issue was I took the Linux cd and put it in the computer and reinstalled Ubuntu. Please let me know if this helps!!!

Never shutdown your pc in that way

-------------------------------------------
Reisub:

Please note instead of press the Reset or power button to reboot the pc please try this:

To manage the freeze of your system and even Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn’t work anymore, the mouse is stuck on the screen any none of the key combinations will work, don’t think of the reset button just yet.

Hold down the Right Alt and SysRq keys and press this sequence:

R E I S U B

This will cleanly unmount drives, terminate processes and nicely reboot your machine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key

Hth

-------------------------------------

Now:

Please boot your pc using the live install cd and please perform a fsck on your Ubuntu partitions

"Loading GRUB 1.5" and power off => perhaps the files in "/boot" directory are corrupted, which would be bad news.
1) Boot on Ubuntu CD
2) Choose option "Try and don't install"
3) Open a terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal)
4) Type in terminal (to check file systems on your hard disk)
        fsck /dev/sda1
        fsck /dev/sda2
and so on...
Ans post if:
a) fsck found errors
b) fsck were able to fix all errors
If some errors are found and not fixed, then perhaps you will have to reinstall.

A last question, are you using Grub2 (it's the case for a fresh install of Lucid) or Grub Legacy (it's the case if you have updated from 9.04 Jaunty) ?

When you put the disk in the drive, you must turn off the computer and then turn it on so that the bios sees the disk at startup and then you should be able to boot from the cd

basically, i did what Joe said to do,

"When you put the disk in the drive, you must turn off the computer and then turn it on so that the bios sees the disk at startup and then you should be able to boot from the cd"

i have even gone into the BIOS settings, set it to load disc up first and it even by-passes this and tries to load the ubuntu OS up...this is just becoming a nightmare as i need to get the laptop working again before tuesday, and i dont think it will work to be honest, but i am prepared to try anything.

If CD-ROM is first in BIOS boot order, but boot start on hard disk, it means your CD-ROM can be used for boot.
You have to do a MD5 check of it. Currently, I can't give you the link and you will have search on the web.

could the problem be that i am trying to boot Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from a DVD Disc?

Could this be the MD5 Checksum that i need to do?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

i am also putting 2 video links on here aswell

the BIOS order of my Dell Studio 1737:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRF3rIxTscI

i pressed onto escape when loading GRUB 1.5 and pressed onto Kernel 26.23.xx.x.7 << or something like that. it ended with a 7 and this list of commands came up, only i dont know what i shud be typing into the command.

I mistyped; "your CD-ROM can't be used for boot" and not "can" !
1) Yes, you have the right address for MD5.
2) In first video, order is HDD before CD-ROM. At opposite, you must have DVD first, before HDD.
After having check MD5 of disk, change boot order, and boot on Ubuntu CD.
