Ubuntu 10.04 wont boot after I disconnect optical drive

Asked by Nick Spiekerman

Running Ubuntu 10.4, loaded it with external optical drive, everything works fine with the cd/rom still attached (no cd in it) but when I disconnect it, it no longer boots. I've made sure the boot order is correct. It stops after the bio screen, Ubuntu screen never comes up, stalls at blank screen with flashing cursor in upper left. If I reconnect cd/rom it works fine.

I don't think that is it, I can boot with no problems when I have the cd/rom attached. If I take it off, it gets stuck at the blank screen.

If I understand, the CD is used as boot device but boot doesn't succeed.
Else you have a problem with optical drive (perhaps need to be cleaned), else your CD is wrong.
So you need firstly to check it:
