Hard drive not found after partition error

Asked by john novilla

I have Windows XP and was trying to install the Ubuntu Netbook edition. During the partitioning part of the installation there was an error. When I reboot the computer the hard drive can no longer be located. It is as if the partitioning is gone. How can I restore my computer? Thanks.

Boot on Live CD (Ubuntu CD followed by option "Try").
System->Administration->Gparted and look at partitions.
If you need help, open a terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), and type command:
    sudo parted -l
where "-l" is lowercase "L", and post result.
Can you provide also the exact error message displayed ? Else I can't guess what is the problem.

I have a sneaking suspicion you didn't read the screen and have removed your windows partition, lets see what the output is....

hi. i tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from my USB drive.
i tried to partition my HD for 82.9GB for Ubuntu (thats just the number Ubuntu suggested when i went to the partitioning part of the installation wizard) and got an error code 10. i gave up trying to do it on this PC, will be getting a fresh one to play with in a week or so. when i boot windows for the first time after failed installation/partitioning, the computer comes up black screen, white text, and checks the disk for bad sectors and verifies security somethings, says everything is a-OK. then i log on, restart as prompted, and all seems good. except that my hard drive is now magically 82.9GB smaller. i have lost no data or files or anything, just that i now have less free space on my HD. what can i do?

If I understand, you are still booting Windows, but with a smallest disk.
Do you want to install Ubuntu alongside or to go back with Windows single OS and whole disk ?

Can you help with this problem?
