New install 10.04, reboots to Harware Monitor & hangs

Asked by Popeye.Tom

This is my first installation of Ubuntu.

New small system, all new hardware except case:
Biostar A785G3 AM3 Micro ATX mobo
Athlon X2 245, 2.9GHz, 65 watt, dual core
Crucial DDR3 1333, 2 x 1G kit
Corsair CMPSU-400CX, 400W power supply, 80+
WD Caviar Blue WD2500AAJS, 250GB
Liteon SATA DVD/r

System posts fine recognizes CPU, RAM, HD, boot sequence set in BIOS.

Loads and runs 10.04 from DVD fine: System posts, goes to selection dialog, pick trial from disk. Hardware Monitor displays and then goes to stickman and keyboard. Loads & runs fine, open FF and browse internet.

Restart system seems fine and no error messages (that I could see) during shutdown. Restart system and from dialog select Install. Proceed through steps, Installer recognizes HD by p/n. Set to wipe and install on entire drive. Set UID, PWD & system name. Install proceeds without a hitch. Get to end and system says it's time to restart.

System ejects disk & I remove it and press enter. Posts, gets to Hardware Monitor and then hangs > no stickman & keyboad > no HD activity, just sits.

Suggestions? Thoughts?

Thanks,
Popeye.Tom

Very IMPORTANT do you have md5sum verified your Ubuntu live install cd iso image... BEFORE to burn it on a cd or to put on a usb bootable stick... ?

Here some general note on install Ubuntu and howto to get a good ubuntu iso cd image (.iso) to burn on a cd:

- Here the steps to install Ubuntu 10.04 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall
- Here a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaqaDZZ_P0g&feature=fvw

The main ubuntu site is this: www.ubuntu.com and the download location is this
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Ubuntu prerequisites: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements
Ubuntu 10.04 release notes: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes

1) please download the 700 mb file http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download simply press on download button
To avoid download errors download the desired ubuntu iso install cd image using the torrent protocol.

- if you are using Windows please install a torrent client i suggest you http://deluge-torrent.org/
and download the iso using a .torrent link from here:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

2) PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK the md5sum of downloaded file to be sure it have no error https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
Only if the md5sum number match with this: http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/MD5SUMS go to the next steps.

3) burn the iso image onto a cd, to do it install and use http://infrarecorder.org/?page_id=5 burn the cd at lower speed you can do and activate the data verify

4) insert the self made install cd into your pc cdrom drive and reboot your pc. YOU MUST NOT SEE Windows starting and you can try Ubuntu from cdrom and then install it

If you have trouble with installation (the system freeze or you can't complete it) be sure to read the above suggestions, then:

1.a ) Please boot entirely (you must not see windows starting) from Ubuntu live install cd and when the system start to boot from cd you will see two bottom screen icons (keyboard and man inside circle ) please press space (choose your desired language) then a screen textual center menu will appear to you with this items in it:

Try Ubuntu without installing
Install Ubuntu
Check disc for defects
Test memory
Boot from first hard disk

Please select "Check disc for defects" and press enter to test if your cd-driver can read in a good way the live install cd... or if the install cd have some defective file in it.
Then please also perform a Test memory to be sure your pc RAM memory have not any issue

If you get a blank screen at boot after install or booting from the Ubuntu install cd please read:

Hi marcobra and delance,

Marc, system meets minimum requirements. I did not run a MD5 checksum on the iso, but I will. I can say that I can browse the disk burned just fine and the contents displayed "look" good.

Booting from the disk I never see Windoze - it doesn't exist! New system, new hardware.

*Running the OS loaded from the disk the 'trial' loads fine.
  >system posts
  >Hardware Monitor reports CPU, system temps, ram, HD, etc
  >see command line...not there for long..."ISO...Linux...Debian..." loading message
  >Stickman and keyboard

If I let it go, it loads Ubuntu just fine from CD.

*I reboot the system and enter the GRUB menu.
  >Check Disk for errors: "Check finished: No errors found"
  >Reboot & enter GRUB
  >Running Memtest86 v 4.0 53% finished. All passed so far, will update when done

Delance, after testing Ubuntu 10.04 x32 Desktop from the CD I rebooted the system and proceeded to the Installation from the first selection menu (Try It! or Install).

After successful completion of all steps of the installation I then proceeded to restart the system as direct by the installation wizard that the "Installation is complete. You need to restart the computer..." Push the Restart Now button, removed the disk when the drive opened and allowed system to restart.

All closing text messages appeared to be fine during shutdown. The system posts fine then displays the Hardware Monitor w/ CPU, system temps, RAM, HD etc Then goes to flashing cursor and nothing. I do not see the loading message "Linux....Debian....etc" It simply sits, hung w/ a flashing _ cursor and does nothing. Cannot enter GRUB, never gets there. No Stickman, no keyboard.

UPDATE: Memtest still running, 48 min. on test 6, no errors found yet.

Thanks,
Tom

Memtest started from GRUB menu completed. Full pass

*****Pass complete, no errors, press Exc to exit*****

Upon reboot, entered GRUB menu and selected 'Boot from first Hard Drive'

system clears GRUB menu and reports:

"Booting from local disk....
_"

(quotes added)

hung.... just sits w/ _ (underscore) cursor. No HDD LED activity.

Now running MHDD 4.6 disk scan test, in process. Ran MHDD Seek & Read, allowed that to run for a bit, reported 15.1 average time, something like 54 for max.

MHDD v 4.6 completed, found no disk problems.

SpinRite v 6.0 now started a level 4 disk surface inspection (and whatever else it does!)

I read again your message.
I think Grub is not installed, which sometimes happens.
Have a look at the following links:

Thanks the time and help, delance.

SpinRite finished and found no physical surface defects on the HD. Well, at least the hardware has been well tested now!

I went ahead and downloaded a new iso image, to a different computer, just because that was where I was today. I did to an MD5 check sum and the download was good. I burned this iso image to a CD and ran install from there.

The system booted into Ubuntu fine from the restart on the install this time! I'm going to go with a bad disc burn the first go round. I find this weird since the GRUB menus disk test said the image was fine, but a bad disc is simple and born out by the fact that the new disc made the installation just fine!

I've had the system download and install the tested graphics drives and it is now doing all 5281 updates that it said were available. (244, actually)

Thank you and Marco for the suggestions and time to help me get this up and running!

Tom
