Ran Ubuntu from disk alongside win7 last night, now after booting to win7 i have no desktop.

Asked by aric bernard

i followed instructions last night, burned ubuntu to cd, then did a reboot with ubuntu disk in, took quit awhile to finally load. cd was very noisey as it was loading and finally came on. played around a little bit...didnt change any settings then shut down. sat down this morning and booted up normally to win7, with no ubuntu cd in drive and i boot up with no desktop at all. everything else works fine apparently. although my cd drive door will open and close on its own for no apparent reason.

Can you confirm ?
You have grub menu with both Ubuntu and W7, and you boot W7 you get a black screen with nothing.

only win7 actually installed on hd. was checking out ubuntu. says to boot from ubuntu cd so you can run ubuntu along side win7 which allows you to play with it before actually installing on hd. I booted up with ubuntu desktop version disk, checked the gui and shut down. rebooted normally to win7 this morning without ubuntu disk in. a bit slow on the boot up but seemed normal. desktop was there but with no icons at all. just a totally blank desktop...normal color scheme etc.

"play with it before actually installing on hd" is called Live CD. You could see later this verb.
If you don't have started Ubuntu installation, the Live CD has written nothing on your disk, and you are supposed to keep your computer in the same state as previously. So your bug is really strange.
Where did you get this Ubuntu CD ?
When you booted, did you get the same screen at startup as usual ?
Did you mounted your Windows hard disk when you were on Live CD session ?

No, Ubuntu can't change settings/preferences of Windows Seven.
So I presume you have a W7 problem unrelated from Ubuntu, except if you mount NTFS (Windows) partition under Ubuntu and do very nasty thing on it.
You should ask help on a Windows forum.
