1) Which version of Windows do you use ? Process to recover MBR differ between XP, Vista and Seven.
2) What kind of file can't you read with Ubuntu ? As there are DRM, some additional software must be downloaded at Medibuntu.
3) If you want to use both Windows and Ubuntu at same time, instead of dual boot, you can use a virtual machine, like Virtual Box. I run Windows XP (and Seven) inside Ubuntu 10.04 at same time. And you could do the opposite, run Ubuntu in a virtual computer on Windows. It's not as efficient as my configuration, but it will allow you to discover Ubuntu without any risk.

Same for me too.

Runniing XP PRO on 500Gb HDD & installed Ubuntu 10.04 on separate 80 gB HDD, to try out.

Very impressed with Ubuntu, so fast and user-friendly, but can no longer get back into XP, which I need to keep for a couple of specialist programs not available in Linux format.

Linux is all new to me and I went too Medibuntu but just got more confused. What are DRM? What is the additional software that must be downloaded? How do I set up Dual Boot?

Ubuntu working fine with one exception..... when I installed my Wireless Broadband USB modem (Huaweu E160) under XP, it worked fine. However all the installation and Run files are Windows, cannot find anything for Linux and therefore cannot get modem to fire up under Ubuntu.

Spent hours trying to get linux software from Huawei but no luck - cannot even get a reply from them. Seems their website is more aimed at Corporate users. No luck with ISP either, they only provide Win and Apple firmware.

If I can solve this problem, I will move all three machines to Ubuntu, maybe use XP on Virtual Drive as suggested.

Can anyone please help point me in right direction? I am computer literate and can get myself around Win XP pretty well, but Linux is so foreign to me.

@Charles Flesfader` please don't hesitate to made your own question from here:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

Please don't made more one question for a single thread if you have more one question to ask please split them.

Adding question here or other comment, don't help to solve the main question and must be to considered wrong.
Doing this don't help you and basically don't help the thread.

Thank you

Gee thanks Marco, I shall do as you say.

Allow me to post ONE question in DIRECT relation to an Answer from delance

I am experiencing the same problem.

Runniing XP PRO SP3 on 500Gb HDD & installed Ubuntu 10.04 on separate 80 gB HDD, to try out.

Very impressed with Ubuntu, so fast and user-friendly, but can no longer get back into XP, which I need to keep for a couple of specialist programs not available in Linux format. Despite changing Boot settings to boot XP HDD first, Grub takes over and I cannot access Windows

LINUX IS VERY NEW TO ME, and I went too Medibuntu but just got more confused.

What are DRM?
What is the additional software that must be downloaded?
How do I set up Dual Boot?

Any other suggestions, please?

Can you help with this problem?
