error no such device - grub rescue

hello all
i installed ubuntu netbook edition 9. something and i installed it through windows.
and now ive restarted it it will no longer boot windows or linux
all it says is

error: no such device: b21012e7-ae74-4805-98c1-bb0beae0eb9a
grub rescue>

ive installed the universal usb installer from the website and sellected the iso file
and ive plugged in the usb and found out how to sellect the computer to boot from usb and it says cannot find os.

i tried some words that the command line accepts. it either goes unknown command or unknown file system

HELLLPPPPP
What should i do???

Please reinstall grub booting from the usb stick... by selecting at boot try Ubuntu without install

hello ive booted ubuntu netbook 10.04 live and i cant figure out what action to take to restore my origial boot settings

i typed in termal
grub-install -v
and it comes back with

grub-install (GNU GRUB 1.98-lubuntu5)

i typed in

sudo update-grub2

and it comes back with

/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?).

Boot with Ubuntu CD, with option "Try but not install" and type commands
    sudo parted -l
    sudo blkid
    sudo more /boot/grub/grub.cfg
