GNU GRUB version 1.97 beta 4 on netbook startup

Asked by useriddad

after an download of an update from this site I get the GNU Grub message.hit tab get [ Minimal Bash-like editing is supported for the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists
device/file completion.]
possible commands are:
. [ badram boot cat chainloader configfile cpuid dump echo exit export halt help initrd insmod linux list_env load_env loopback ls
lsmod parser.rescue parser.sh reader.normal reader.rescue reboot rmmod root save_env search set sleep source
    terminal_input.console terminal_output.console test unset ]

This is a netbook with NO hard drive. The netbook had Windows xp factory installed. When you try to boot to XP you get the "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt windows\system32\config\system

How can I get rid of Ubuntu and just have Windows or at least fix Umbuntu so it is usable?

The OS is called UBUNTU, no umbuntu:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_(operating_system)

If the system has no HDD, What are your OSes installed to?

If you boot to live USB environment you can reinstall grub2. Once grub is good it may bot windows nice, otherwise you will need to ask in a windows forum regarding the windows message

Not understanding. Ubuntu is the not the operating system on any of our other computers, nor do I want it to be. How can I boot to a live USB environment to reinstall? or how can I uninstall?

It is installed on the netbook with the GRUB message. I can't get out of that screen to get any files to put Umbutu on a USB. Beside the choose the operating system menu, I can get to the setup utility menu.
Can you walk me through putting Ubuntu onto a USB from the netbook? Then how to reinstall?

If the netbook refuses to boot then you will need a different PC to put the CD image on a USB device.

Once again I don't have a Ubuntu cd, I downloaded and upgraded Ubuntu directly from this site.

Hello,
1) If you have currently problem with WIndows XP, first thing is to install it again with restoration partition. it will be largely more difficult after Ubuntu is installed again.
It will also allow you install Ubuntu installer in USB key from ISO image (and download the image).
2) After having XP working, you need to download ISO image of Ubuntu CD.
3) If you have no external DVD reader, you need to move IOS image to USB key via a dedicated software.
4) After boot on USB key, and install Ubuntu
If you have question on one step, don't hesitate to require help.

You say you try to boot XP.
It means you have a menu with both Ubuntu and XP at start.
Can you confirm ?

Can you help with this problem?
