Ubuntu won't boot after install

Asked by Dug

I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 onto an IDE hard drive (250Gb). This is the only OS on the computer. I installed from a USB flash drive and used the default settings. The installation went through with no issues. Now, when I turn on my computer it will go through the POST and everything. It sees the IDE drive installed and right after that it goes to a blank screen with a flash cursor in the top left corner. If I put the USB flash drive I installed from back into the computer Ubuntu will boot up with no problems (and it doesn't boot the trial Ubuntu, it boots the Ubuntu that has my desktop and everything set up).

FYI, ALL drives are IDE, even SCSI. When most people say IDE, they mean PATA.

Boot to the USB device and reinstall grub to the internal drive, it should be fine.

From what I've been doing, it looks like the meat of the OS was installed on the thumb drive because I can load Ubuntu when I tell the computer to boot from the thumb drive (thinking I would bring up the trial mode again and do a fresh install over what I have). I've reloaded Grub (1.98) and reloaded several of the Ubuntu files through the synaptic software thing.

So now:

Is there a way to wipe out an installation (without a windows disk. If I had a windows disk I wouldn't be going through all this) and make sure it loads the OS onto my HARD DRIVE?

The OS is already there, you just need to install grub to the internal drive:

I finally figured out what I had to do about the Grub installation. I went in to the Synaptic Program thing and completely removed the Grub-pc installation. Then I reinstalled it, making sure that it went to the installed hard drive and not anywhere else. I was afraid to reboot my computer all afternoon because I didn't know if it would work or not. The Grub installation files are a bit convoluted and confusing to someone who doesn't really know their way around Linux that well. This is all new and thank you both for helping, even if your instructions were generalized! Thanks!
