Grub 2 won't start. Grub 1.5 does start. Computer attempts network boot.

Asked by Peter T.

I can install Debian 5.04 dual boot on either of my Dell Windows 7 laptops. This gives grub 1.5 which works correctly as expected.

When I try to install Kubuntu or Ubuntu 10.04 I get Grub2. Grub 2 works once or twice then the start up goes to ethernet boot and not grub. grub no longer shows up.

One solution I tried: I tried to make a triple boot with Ubuntu before Debian but Debian will not see the Ubuntu and write it into Grub 1.5 it only sees Windows. Answer I need here is how to get Debian Grub install to see the existing Ubuntu?

Is there a way to down grade to Grub 1.5 with Ubuntu 10.4? This would also work I think and I would not need to Debian to install Grub 1.5.

How do I install Ubuntu 10.4 with Grub 1.5. Other solutions welcome. peace on earth

To uninstall grub2 and reinstall grub-legacy, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 , chapter 12, but you need to boot into ubuntu first and I take it you can't do that. I also take it you have your debian grub (grub-legacy) set to sda (mbr) and that cannot boot ubuntu. I also assume ubuntu is not in ext4. (Grub-legacy cannot 'see' ext4)

To boot Ubuntu from your debian grub-legacy, use chainloading. You may want to create an entry at the Debian menu.lst while keeping the Ubuntu grub at grub2.

I also recommend you create a grub rescue cd when booted into Ubuntu. Do that first before uninstalling grub2, if you do that. It will come in very handy, especially when you upgrade your debian and that will use grub2 and you have changed your ubuntu to grub-legacy. And here we go again...

Peace on earth too.

ps: my suggestion? Set your ubuntu grub2 to sda (mbr)

Thanks for the link to the Grub 2 info that is what really helps. I will try to solve this now by reinstalling Grub2. Then if that does not work I will do more research at the linked page and perhaps come back and look more at your specificed solution. You have mostly provided me with more info for me to solve this myself so thanks.

You can not assume I can not boot into Ubuntu as I could reintall it and boot into it once before the failure would occur.

Two you can not assume Ubuntu is not ext4. In that assumption you have provided an answer as to why legacy Grub won't see the Ubuntu.

Thanks for the quick response to my first post here.

So I will reinstall Grub 2 and debug it using more information now.
