Booting xp in dual boot makes grub2 unreachable

Asked by Pascal Pieters

I have a Medion MD 95500 with 2GB RAM and 1.72 Ghz processor.
I have a dual boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu installed.
When I boot the first time I get the grub2 menu to let me choose between Ubuntu or XP.
I can reboot Ubuntu as many times as I want and I always get the grub2 menu with Ubuntu and XP.
But ... if I choose Windows XP the first time to boot and restart the computer, I don't enter the grub2 menu anymore, so I can't choose Ubuntu anymore after booting XP :-(
I have reinstalled grub2 several times (with Ubuntu Live Cd) and every time I keep getting the same problem : when Windows closes it seems to overwrite (or make dissapear?) grub2 in the MBR.
Anyone else encountered this problem?

I don't think anyone solved it already. The status says 'Answered' : this means that somebody has given an answer to the question. When it says 'Solved' the problem is solved. Unfortunatly not yet, i am affraid.
I reported this as a bug also.
Hope to have a solution for this very anoying problem soon.

You could have a look at question https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+question/118604 , to check if similar. Currently not solved.

When Installing Ubuntu...What boot loader did you choose during the install?

I don't think I had to choose a boot loader. I used the live cd from Edubuntu (with Ubuntu version 10.04). So I think for Ubuntu 10.04 the boot loader is automatticaly grub2.

Joe, I installed grub2 and still cannot get xp to boot although it shows
as a choice.

I am having bad luck in general with 10.04. No network. No boot xp on 1
hdd. No boot Ubuntu on another that says "low graphics mode" then
choices but none work so no Ubu.

There are hundreds of cases similar to our grub2 problem, what is so
difficult IF you are a programmer?

Skip

I honestly have installed Ubuntu on several computers with Windows XP and never had an issue so naturally I believe that something during your install didn't go correctly so you should reinstall Ubuntu. I am pretty sure this will resolve your issue...............YOU NEED TO REINSTALL UBUNTU, THE ENTIRE OS NOT JUST THE BOOT LOADER

Thanks. By reinstalling I lose everything don't I? I am not sure never
having done it. And I have favorites and email I don't want to lose.

@skip: please could you subscribe the bug report, to give more credibility to it, and fasten it's fixing.
It seems some few XP installation are doing nasty things on MBR when they are booted... I saw two another question about it.
It seems to me, that now you talk about unable to boot on XP. Could you describe exactly what is your current problem, and if it is the same as Pieters.
@Pieters:
After installing Ubuntu again (yes, I know it's painful), could you type:
   dd if=/dev/sda of=$HOME/MBR_after_Ubuntu_install count=1
Then after boot under XP, restart with Ubuntu CD in live session (option "Try without install"), mount the hard disk, and type:
   dd if=/dev/sda of=<mounting point>/home/pieters/MBR_after_XP_boot count=1
and
   cmp -b <mounting point>/home/pieters/MBR_after_Ubuntu_install <mounting point>/home/pieters/MBR_after_XP_boot

Can you help with this problem?
