upgraded to 10.04 stuck in grub rescue

Asked by Joey Bassett

I have win 7 and ubuntu on my computer and i upgraded to 10.04 and all went well until a window poped up asking me which partitions i should put some files (not sure what exactly, said something about the BIOS) and it said if you dont know which to put the files, that you should put them in all of the partitions, the updater finished what it was doing and said i needed to restart the computer to finish the upgrade and when i did this i get

error: no such device: 4ab78909-b17d-42b0-b384-eb5e3b7979b6.
grub rescue> _

and cant get any further, cant even load windows, it just goes straight to the error...but i also know nothing about ubuntu so this may be an easy fix, but i have no clue what to do.

if you had installed ubuntu into a partition, then boot into your Ubuntu live CD, mount your Ubuntu root partition (by opening the partition in nautilus) then open a terminal and type "sudo grub-install /dev/sda --root-directory=<a long list of character eg:be0fc721-5a96-4688-bb6a-9a585a047e13, you can press the tab key>" wait for it to complete and then type "sudo update-grub"

Hi:

I have 3 day's with my Ubuntu 10.4 Os

I have the same problem yesterday, I read almost 50 web sites who given to me the solution, but nothing works....

The solution was very very easy !

You need your Windows 7 Installation CD or Windows 7 System Repair

Solution 1 with CD/DVD System Repair

1 Insert the CD/DVD and turn on your machine
2 follow the instructions (the message is Windows Can't find a problem)
3 Select the option Command Prompt
4 in Command Prompt type exactly as here

        bootrec.exe/FixMbr

and then enter it takes like 3 seconds and the problem is fixed
5 Restart your machine!
6 Enjoy!

Solution 2 with Cd/DVD Win 7 Installation

1 Insert the CD/DVD and turn on your machine
2 Select the option "System Repair"
3 follow the instructions (the message is Windows Can't find a problem)
4 Select the option Command Prompt
5 in Command Prompt type exactly as here

        bootrec.exe/FixMbr

and then enter it takes like 3 seconds and the problem is fixed
6 Restart your machine!
7 Enjoy!

Can you help with this problem?
