system hangs when I select Win 7 from grub after upgrade

I've been running a system with dual boot to Windows 7 (64) and Ubuntu 9.10. I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. The grub menu appears at boot, I can run Ubuntu with no problem. However, select Windows 7 from the menu, I get a black screen with a cursor in the upper left, no response. The startup manager provides no clues.
