grub2 won't boot Windows most of the time

Asked by Ronald Weiss

I have installed Windows 7, Then Lucid Lynx on the same hard drive. When I boot to the grub menu, and choose Windows 7, the computer just reboots to the menu. If I choose Ubuntu 10.04, then it boots to Ubuntu. Sometimes it will boot to Windows after I've been using Ubuntu, but usually not. I like Ubuntu, but I'm not ready to give up Windows yet, and I need the dual boot to work. I'm in Windows now typing this, but I'm afraid if I shut down, I won't be able to get back to Windows.

I can run bootrec /fixmbr from the Windows installation disk, but then I can't boot to Ubuntu. Please help. I'm an old Windows user, but not well-versed in Linux, so please make your answers simple. Thank you.

I'm still having this trouble several days after I posted this question. After I've been using Lucid Lynx (32 bit), When I try to boot back into Windows 7 (32 bit), more than half the time, the computer just reboots back to the grub menu. But sometimes, it will boot into Window. When I choose to boot Ubuntu, it works 100% of the time. I have had no responses so far. Has this problem stumped everyone, or have I not provided enough information? Please ask if you need more info.

Thanks,

Ron

Ronald, are both Windows and Ubuntu on same drive? But anyway, try this out..
Boot into Ubuntu and at a terminal type the following.....
sudo grub-install /dev/sda

Can you help with this problem?
