Ubuntu 9.10 won't boot after updates (wubi)

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 (32 bit) in Windows XP on one machine. On restarting following updates this morning, when I select Ubuntu from the initial screen the computer hangs displaying 'GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4' and an additional message '[ Minimal BASH-like line editing......................... ] which I don't really understand and won't boot. If I select Windows it boots OK.

Having studied the posts for bug #477104 I have fixed the problem by the method suggested by Thorsten vS (post #24). So thanks to Thorsten for that, but I would like to express my disappointment that a production version of Ubuntu should fail to boot due to an update. Fixing it has cost me time and time costs money!
