Updated version 10.4 didn´t start

Asked by José Augusto Vallegas

I've executed the automatic update on Ubunto from version 9.10, previously installed on a IBM ThinkPad G40 that was working properly for almost a year. After the downloading of the files and the deletion of the old ones, I answered the question about grub as not to use the actual file installed. When the process finished, I clicked the bottom for restart, the session closed, the computer restarted, presented the logo of Ubuntu and then got black. Now I intent to burn a CD with the version 10.4 and hope I will be able to fix it without erasing the partition and all the data on the computer. Is this correct or there is another way to fix it?

You have to avoid to format partition which hold /home folder.
If you have not a partition dedicated to /home, it means the / partition.
In this case, it means ANY formating.
You will have useless files on your computer, but it will not prevent you to use Ubuntu.
N.B.: if you have an external drive, you can with LiveCD make a backup of your home partition.

I pressed shift key to select manualy the image to load, as suggested on other question, then I found that the old version 2.6.31-21 was still working, but, when I tried the version 2.6.32-22, result the problem I have reported early.

Try to edit file /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
You should see an entry named 2.6.32-22 (and perhaps a second with recovery), remove it and reboot.
We will have to investigate properly later.

Can you help with this problem?
