recovering bootloader after reinstalling windows

after i try
grub> file /boot/grub/stage1
file not found

what do i do to get the bootloader

Please tell us your Ubuntu release installed on hard disk is an Ubuntu 10.04 installed from scratch or an updated Ubuntu 10.04 from previuos release or something else...?

I have Ubuntu ultimate edition 2.6 installed

Ok so you have grub2 installed (is different from grub) please read:
