Dual boot xp and ubuntu latest version does not load.

Asked by FajardXorg

I read the possible solution in the suggestions, but i would like to know for sure what my problem is - it is similar.
in the past i have installed vista and ubuntu(8.4) as dual boot. however, the problem showed when i swiped vista and installed Xp professional. i installed ubuntu and it went well, but when i reboot and select Ubuntu from the Grub menu it load but it does not load the GUI or welcome screen. It is only text blinking and it does not allow me to type my screen name and password.
the second problem is when i select XP from the Grub menu, it says 'no media to boot from.'
i tried solving the problem by deleting the Ubuntu partition, so i restarted , it did not worked and the computer displays grub rescue>.... .

can any one help me with solutions
thanks.

It looks like you have a really messy mbr problem. Here's what I think you should do:

1. Boot a Live CD and back up all of your data. (Including windows data)
2. Reinstall windows, repartitioning everything. (Leave about half for Ubuntu)
3. Reinstall Ubuntu with extra space

Also, it might be a good idea to do a manual setup with /boot in its own partition. That way you can add or remove OSs and it stays safe, as well as in system crashes.

Hopefully that should help.
