Two and more os options at boot

I have installed windows vista and ubuntu in my hp dv4 1257 tx laptop and i have upgraded it now ihave also installed kde 4.0.
Now after some time of installing ubuntu and upgrading it I saw three os choices instead of two which were shown at first then after sometime again installing software I got four os choices three for ubuntu and one for vista. So May i know why this has happened and how to avoid this and will it affect anything by somehow it is being avoided. This is just increasing as i am updating ubuntu 9.04? Please kindly help me?

Here's the info to enlighten you, every time you update to a new kernel (core of os) it adds a boot entry for that kernel as well as the previous one. just in case the new one does not work, so if it's all good with the update then you can remove the old one.

To remove a old one just go to Synaptic Package Manager or Adept and search for linux-image. They are numbered so you can remove them pretty easily, it should update the boot loader as well.

Also, you can remove the linux-header and linux-header generic that corresponds to that version.

For Example

linux-image-2.6.31-15-generic;
linux-headers-2.6.31-15;
linux-headers-2.6.31-15-generic;
