Dual boot on portable drive

I have Windows Vista installed on my PC's internal hard disk. I have installed Ubuntu on my external hard disk. During booting a boot screen appears to select the operating systems I wanna boot. So, far it's ok. But the problem is when I try to boot my computer without my external hard disk, a black screen appears and shows me "error 21". How can I boot my computer in Vista without my external hard disk?
