Grub loading Stage 1.5, Grub loading please wait, error 17

Asked by Ken Warwick

I have loaded Ubuntu 9:04 on my third Drive-I in the windows system, for a dual boot with W/Xp which is on the C drive. D is a data drive and J is a data drive, E,F,G, H are 2 CD/DVD drives and a multi card reader. I get the error 17 business above when I try to boot. Here is the results of my "sudo fdisk _l " command:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -1
fdisk: invalid option -- '1'

Usage: fdisk [-b SSZ] [-u] DISK Change partition table
       fdisk -l [-b SSZ] [-u] DISK List partition table(s)
fdisk -s PARTITION Give partition size(s) in blocks
       fdisk -v Give fdisk version
Here DISK is something like /dev/hdb or /dev/sda
and PARTITION is something like /dev/hda7
-u: give Start and End in sector (instead of cylinder) units
-b 2048: (for certain MO disks) use 2048-byte sectors
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk-i
sudo: fdisk-i: command not found
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -I
fdisk: invalid option -- 'I'

Usage: fdisk [-b SSZ] [-u] DISK Change partition table

I am not quite sure what all the above means.
I really don't know where to go from here.
All suggestions are welcome and thanks are given.
Can I use my W/XP installation disk to repair my windows XP so it will boot?
This is where my data is, ie, in the W/XP partition.

Us e test disk found on the parted magic live CD to examine and correct your partition table... you could have exceeded the four primary partition rule... !

Can you help with this problem?
