Hi,

Error 15, "file not found," means that grub, the Ubuntu loader, is missing.

I could not say why this has happened, but today I had a similar problem when upgrading to 9.10.

From what I read around the Internet, you might fix the problem without formatting the hard disk.

I believe a possible solution might be to use a live CD of Ubuntu and reinstall Grub from there, but I am not sure how to proceed, so let's wait for someone to tell you how.

Good luck.

I had a similar problem when manually upgrade to Grub 2, see question https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+question/84764 , I followed the directions found in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows and rebooted. This actions cleared up this problem. Basically, installed grub from scratch and mounted the appropriate partitions. Good luck.
