Looks like your grub install is faulty. Did you MD5 test the wubi installer (and if downloaded, the ISO used for installing)?

I have resolved my problem but as recorded below, I do not know what
went wrong!

To check my installation procedure, I repeated the process, starting
from downloading Ubuntu 9.10(Karmic Koala) Beta from the mirror
http://mirrors.utah.edu/releases/9.10
For "Select an Image" I chose "PC(Intelx88)desktop CD"
Thus I have chosen to open "ubuntu-9.10-beta-desktop-i386.iso"
With Firefox I have chosen to open with "WinCDEmu Mounter"
On download, right click mouse "open"
Select "Run wubi.exe"
select "Install inside windows"
Completing the ubuntu set up wizard
Choose "Reboot" select "Ubuntu"
Ubuntu logo followed by "checking the installation..." until automatic reboot.

It is at this stage that problems arose...

Upon re-boot and choosing Ubuntu, I received three different error
response from three successive "clean" installation attempts.

On the fourth installation.....Success. Each boot-up since, success.

Thank you for your interest.

You again failed to verify anything you downloaded. You are downloading massive blocks of data over a packet switched public network. At any point there may be a bad network device which garbages the data. TCP does a good job at catching bad data but some can get through and MD5 checks capture these as the hash will be different, so you know the data is bad

Many windows users and new linux users are ignorant of this and assume "it'll be ok, jack" but a lot of the time people having bad install experiences haven't checked their data then when they get an issue and check, realise the data is bad.

Check your ISO files you download. The CDs also have a self check function so you can verify the burned CD. This also helps to smooth installs over.

I wish to thank you again actionparsnip for the valuable lesson. It must be clear that I am a novice in these matters.
However, for such as I yet to come, perhaps the tests you recommend should be incorporated into a prescribed Ubuntu
loading/download procedure.

Thank you

Possibly. The wubi installer itself needs checking manually but the iso it downloads will be checked. You will always need to verify the first step, even if it is a downloader/checker for the ISO, the downloader app will need verifying.
