Complex Technical Solution

Asked by Steve J

Why does ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386 (latest version) provide a solution for duel boot that does not work?
The duel boot facility would have been a good solution, whilst I became familiar with the graphical interface of Ubuntu and continued to use the old Windows XP Prof.
The PC although containing ubuntu and XP now only boots to ubuntu.
All solutions viewed so far refer are complex technical corrections, which frankly are beyond most users.
I’m not a complete novice to IT and find the duel boot promise a bit of a let down.

Qu. Is there a repair programme that will help... or will in be an epic journey of learning to retrieve the functionality of XP without a reload from factory setting, involving BOOT.ini, and Grub, (hd0,0) and SUDO gparted.. etc

Symptoms
Ubuntu boot ok
XP is display as a choice during boot up, If selected the XP splash screen appears momentarily and them PC shuts down.

During the installation
XP was working 100% ok
Disc was checked for errors - OK
Defragged XP - OK
Selected the option to place Ubuntu on a separate petition, which used 50% of the exiting FAT35 (100 GB of 200 GB) - OK

Problem
XP no longer boots up, but the NTFS petition still contains XP on the first petition.

A simple none complicated solution would be much appreciated

Ubuntu should detect Windows XP partitions automatically during installation and offer Windows XP as a choice in the GRUB menu.

Does Windows no longer show up on the GRUB menu? (GRUB may say "Press Esc to show GRUB" when your computer boots up... Press the Escape key)

Did Ubuntu not detect your Windows partition when you installed, and failed to place a Windows option in the list?

Matthew,
Ubuntu detected the Windows XP and the other two petitions which included a restorable Arc and backup, etc .
The options to compress the the existing Window XP was clearly identified during the installation, and a sliding bar provided a means of selecting a suitable petitsion size which in turn shrank the exist XP petition.
(ntfs 3 drives, ext3, swapfile) in all 5 petitions

After Ubuntu was installed via a bootable CD,

The PC was re booted from the Hard Drive, *The first screen provided clear option to run unbunto or XP,
(im assum this was the grub loader)
Unbunto was selcted and everthing went to plan - OK

I Rebooted, and the next time i picked XP,
However on this ocation the XP slash screen was visable for about 1 sec and the PC Booted itself. into a loop thus *
(note The grub loader was not part of the original xp build, I assume The grub came with Ubuntu, xp using MBR )

Paragon Hard Disk Manager has provided evidance the petition is there with a Window Operating System at h(0),0
For now im going to play and road test the install.....for duel boot.
Assuming I can remove all remains of the grub, Ubuntu, swap, ext3 etc and recover from an image arc windows XP.
I will then attempt to repeat the process for confirmation. (Further Detail to follow)

No further action required, Just desided to start over....installing duel boot systems for the beginer in not with out its risks, and you spend a lot of time researching something you real dont need.
