After Vi$ta/Ubuntu dual boot install Grub shows Windows Vista (loader) twice

Asked by Dave Haring

Hello. Have Vista64 on drive C and just put Ubuntu64 9.04 on drivve D. Grub has taken over. Fine. However, it shows "Windows Vista (loader)" twice. If I use the first one I get a white screen with giant red letters "ERROR". If I use the second one then it boots Vista fine. Anyone know why this is? And how I get it out of there? Thanks.

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo fdisk -l

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

copy and paste result here

then type:

gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

copy and paste the contents here

Thank you

This Asus G71G has Express Gate which is some other Linux OS preinstalled with Vista. Maybe this has something do do with? And Grub is unable to boot Express Gate? If this is case then ok I can understand and disregard. Here is information you request. Thanks your help!

First back up your menun list by typing in terminal

sudio cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.01

Now edit your menu list

gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

remove this

# This entry automatically added by the Debian installer for a non-linux OS
# on /dev/sda1
title Windows Vista (loader)
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1

save and close file. Now you should have one Vista entry and correct boot in it.
