grub menu.lst giving error

Asked by vishal khialani

Hi,
I have added two option to my menu.lst

FIRST OPTION - 18042.nomux=1 - this is for my touchpad to work and its going good so no problem with this.

SECOND OPTION - usbserial.vendor=0x19d2
THIRDE OPTION -usbserial.product=0xfff1 -
I use this to connect my wvdial to my usb modem. When gurb loads it says

UNKOWN BOOT OPTION "usbserial.vendor=0x19d2" -- ABORTING
UNKOWN BOOT OPTION "usbserial.vendor=0x19d2" -- ABORTING

What am I doing wrong here as this has worked before on kde but I had to switch back to genome as its more lighter.

Cheers,
Vishal Khialani

Is the line all on one line? You cannot break the line up. If you turn off text wrapping then you can check.

If that fails, take the options for the modem out and put the following line in

/etc/rc.local

rmmod usbserial
modprobe usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0xfff1

but above the 'exit 0' line

This will then run that command at bootup and means that the module will be removed the reloaded with appropriate options.

Hi,
I tried to make sure everything is in one line but still the options failed in menu.lst

I then put it in /etc/rc.local and restarted the file and nothing happened the modem is not getting loaded.
I had read somewhere that modprobe for usbserial won't work anymore in ubuntu jaunty only pervious version will support that.

so I have no option but to use menu.lst but for some reason it not working in that too. I have been sucessful previously in kubuntu but for some reason ubuntu is having this problem.

Hope to get more advice to resolve this.

Cheers,
Vishal

Hi,
I was wondering why the /etc/rc.local did not work and tried it at the teriminal promot and got the below error

 modprobe usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0xfff1
FATAL: Error inserting usbserial (/lib/modules/2.6.28-13-generic/kernel/drivers/usb/serial/usbserial.ko): Invalid module format

Not sure then. You will have to keep punching with various parts of the system to get the options used for the modules.

You may want to look at /etc/modules

It may give a hope.

Hi,
Pls have a look at this article (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/345002 ) I think they have done this successfully. I have read this back and forth. Its been only a week since I have shifted to linux and I am afraid I have missed out something.

Hope you can guide to me where I am making the mistake I am sure the answer is to put it in menu.lst but why am I the only one where I am getting the error.

Ur help is highly appreciated.

Cheers,
Vishal Khialani

Hi,
The problem was not with what I was writing but something to do with usb module first being put into a part of the kernel and then removing it and then again being part as a module.

So finally I found out that I need to update my kernel which I did and everything worked GREAT !!

So thank you so much for your efforts and help

Cheers,
Vishal
