bootloader doesnt show XP

Asked by kamal.sharma18@gmail.com

hi to all,

I have just installed the ubuntu 9.04 on my machine. there was XP also on this. my configuration goes like this.
I have 2 HDD one of them is ATA 80GB which is primary master and having ubuntu installed on it. the other one is SATA 250 GB which is secondary master and had XP installed on it till date.

the grub on my machine loads without any option to XP and looks like the following (as you can see no entries for XP.)
I can see the drives in ubuntu but the normal solution i found on other posts did not work out (which is adding an entry for XP with hd1,0 as root).

pls guide me what can be done in the case.

Hello Kamal.sharma18, I just had a similar problem and after a lot of reading and trying different things, the following worked for me.

after < ###END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST >
if windows is on sdb1 in menu.lst it becomes hd1,0 everything is one less. this example shows windows on my pc as (hd1,1) which is actually sdb.
add this ( probably not exactly)

### END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST

title WindowsXP
rootnoverify (hd1,1)
makeactive
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
chainloader +1
boot

Oh don't forget to save the file and when it closes run <sudo grub-update> and finally type< sudo reboot > and that should do it. I hope this works for you. tombo

Hmmm, i would think that maybe the partition is the 1st partition on that drive so i might change that last answer a little bit

title Microsoft Windows XP
root (hd1,0)
savedefault

I would probably miss out the mapping stuff and i'm not sure what the "boot" command does. I'm also not sure what "savedefault" does or whether it's necessary either.

Really i would recommend having a look at what your drives and partitions look like to ubuntu and then we can work out what would be best for grub. So go up to the top taskbar and click on

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

and into the terminal/command window/console type

sudo fdisk -l

and then copy&paste the results into here ;)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
