boot error 17. i really need help.

Asked by Monk3007

I have a Dell Inspiron B130 running Windows XP. I deleted ubuntu to free up space. Now when I try to boot up this comes up:

GRUB Loading stage1.5

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 17

: I waited a couple of minutes and nothing happened. It did not come with recovery CDs. Is there any way to fix it without buying a new one? I really need help.

Do you have a Windows XP installation disk? If so, you should be able to use it to get to a recovery console(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058) and use the command:

fixmbr

To rewrite the Master Boot Record. You can read more about fixmbr here: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/bootcons_fixmbr.mspx?mfr=true

While in the recovery console, you might want to run "fixboot" as well.

You said, "It did not come with recovery CDs." Which I am guessing means that there is a good chance you do not have a Windows XP installation disk. I did some searches for "fixmbr no windows disk" and found pointers to various websites to sites that provide boot disks from which you can run fixmbr or similar utilities. However, never having used one, I can't really recommend one.

Can you help with this problem?
