remove GRUB Loader

Asked by Robert Collard

Dell Inspiron running Vista home premium with a USB drive attached holding Ubuntu 9.04. I want to keep both but don't like GRUB loader. The reason is that sometimes I take the laprtop out without the attached USB drive and I cannot load Vista without it. I really like Ubuntu and use it mostly at home, but I don't wish to make it my primary system. Any other alternatives?"

Nice software, BUT, it does not recognize my external USB drive for the Ubuntu system.  Maybe because the software is already installed?  I don't know.  I sure would hate to replace everything and start over again, I would lose all my settings for my wireless internet and that was a lot of work.  Let me ask you this, would it work if I removed the external drive and partitioned my internal HD with a partition for Ubuntu and use the external drive for extra backup and storage?  I still don't want to lose my settings.  But, I could live with GRUB if I can disconnect the external drive.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Hello,

Partitioning is a good idea, but I think it's possible to replace the Vista bootloader with GRUB, so it will be on the internal drive, and configure it so it can start both Vista and Ubuntu from the USB drive, though I'm not sure.

I decided to do what I should have done in the first place. I partitioned my internal drive on my laptop, added Ubuntu and moved on. I now have my external drive partitioned for MSDOS and LINUX storage and backup. I will live with GRUB and take both systems with me. Thanks for the help.
