GRUB Error 22

Asked by rsvasan72

Hi,
I am quite new to Linux OS. I have Win-XP home edition installed on my system and was installing Ubuntu Linux on top of that. Everything went well until it said Installing GRUB boot loader and it restarted the system. After that I get an error message 22 and stops!
I could succesfully boot on Live CD and post this message. Any help to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Srini

I encountered the exact same error after installing Ubuntu alongside Windows 2000 Pro. In my case, I don't know where grub was put. It never asked, just went ahead and installed it somewhere. The odd part is that I discovered, quite by accident, that if there's a bootable CD in my CD drive (one that doesn't boot automatically, but asks you to press a key), grub will display its menu and I can run either OS. If the CD drive is empty or has a non-bootable CD in it, grub comes up with the error 22 and I'm dead in the water. Anyone have any clue as to why that might be? Where should I put grub, using the methods described in the link in the previous post?

Just use the method barry.haertel posted. I did and it worked like a charm.

hi friends,
I am a graduate student from India.
Though my language is not very good, I submit how i resolved the problem.
To day i encountered a series of problems related to grub in the morning.
Reason is that I installed SUSE Linux i recently get by repartitioning one of my partitions with parted magic.
and changed some partitions again.
Any way first it shows grub error 15

I booted with my Ubuntu 7.10 live Cd
mounted the partition in which i installed Ubuntu earlier.then went to /usr/share/doc/grub-doc of mounted partitions and read grub manual.
And according to which make a grub floppy.
booted from it
>find /boot/grub/stage1
 (hd0,1)
//that is grub is the file is at second partition
//then set that partition as root

>root (hd0,1)
>setup (hd0,1)

//this will install grub at second partition

>reboot

============================
now it shows grub error: 15

I booted from parted magic live cd.
found that my first primary partition (ie.,NTFS volume with XP is currupted)
i set second primary partition (ie., (hd0,1)) as bootable
restarted with XP cd in cd rom
selected repair
then enter FIXMBR
it asks for confirmation press enter.
now my MBR is in good condition.
Now i restarted again .
Now grub booted without any complaint.

moral:
problem is because corrupted boot record.
fix it.
