Installed GRUB2 in place of GRUB and now Ubuntu does not boot

Asked by Hernan Praddaude

Naively, I thought that GRUB2 was an update to GRUB so I installed it, and now Ubuntu 9.04 (or any other) does not boot at all, and the other OS (Windows) is not recognized. The GRUB2 window keep asking to press ENTER but it takes me to the same condition. I can not get into the Add/Remove pgms. option or the Synaptic Packages option using the Ubuntu CD. I am at a loss about what to do short of reinstalling Ubuntu (which at this moment is not an option). Do you know what I can do to resolve this unhappy situation?
Thank you all for comments.
Hernan

If you can boot up using the Ubuntu Cd and use

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

or alternatively do a normal boot but use the second Ubuntu option, the one that has "Recovery Mode" at the end of the line to "drop to a Root shell" or something.

Either way on a command-line type in

sudo grub

find /boot/grub/stage1

this should give at least one but possibly more results such as (hd0,2), which would mean 1st, primary hard-drive's 3rd partition, the one Ubuntu normally calls sda3. Grub is good at talking to machines rather than people so it counts from 0. Anyway take the numbers it gives you and replace my numbers in this example with the ones your machine gave you

root (hd0,2)

setup (hd0)

quit

Hopefully that should reinstall the proper grub and booting into Windows or Ubuntu should work fine now, so just reboot :)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hello Tom:
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question :) Do I know you? Have you by any chance been a helpful hand at the old MICRION?
Feedback about the answer: I used the Ubuntu CD to boot and got to " Applications - Accessories - Terminal". From there I was able to reinstall GRUB but, unfortunately, I did not removed the GRUB2 empty file, so I ended at the same place as before (my fault), and reinstalled Ubuntu 9.04. Fortunately I have a different HD partition for /home so I did not lose much stuff. Things are AOK now, at least until my next boo-boo!
Best regards.
Hernan

Nicely done :)))
Congrats on fixing it. Good to hear you have a separate /home, that makes things much easier. Sorry it went to a full install tho.
There's a lot of Toms in here, i don't know Micrion but always glad to help :)
Thanks and regards from
